How Thick Are Most Exterior Doors: How to Measure Entry Doors

Considering replacing your entry doors but not sure how to order the proper size? Ordering the wrong size door can save you money and time, so it’s important to get the measurements correct the first time.

In this article, we will discuss the standard size of exterior doors Toronto. Also, we will give a brief guide on how to measure entry doors correctly.

How Thick Are Most Exterior Doors?

The majority of entry doors are similar in thickness. However, thick entry doors, such as custom doors, exist. Generally, most doors are around 1 ¾” to 2“ in thickness. Per this standard, most door vendors provide hardware options, such as locks that are made to fit the standard exterior door size.

However, custom doors such as arched doors, French double doors, barn front doors, and so forth might vary in size. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to obtain the correct measurement before you order your replacement entry doors. This will save you great money, time, and hassle in the long run.

Following, we will educate you on how to obtain the measurements of both single-entry doors.

How to Measure a Single Front Door

An important rule in obtaining correct measurements is to measure twice (or three times) and record once. Be sure to have a pen/pencil and paper on hand to record the measurement as soon as you obtain it not to forget anything.

First, you will need to measure the width of the existing prehung door, starting with the interior. Obtain a measurement from one side of the door panel to the other.

For the height of the door, you will need to start at the top of the door panel and all the way to the bottom edge of the exterior door.

Next, you will need to obtain the thickness of the door as well as the width of the door thickness. To get an accurate measure of the thickness of the door, you will measure the edge of the front door. Next, locate the wooden frame that keeps the door in place to find the correct measurement of the door jamb and then obtain the height and depth. You might need to remove a section of the door trim to get this information, as it is crucial not to include the trim width in the measurement. Lastly, you will measure the height and width of the door frame. Finally, obtain the measurement of the inside edge of the door trim from inside the house.

In order to ensure that the entry door is level and square, obtain a measurement from one corner to the opposite making an X-type pattern to ensure that the measurements match. If they do, in fact, match, the door is thus square. To ensure that the door is plumb, use a level on the sides and top of the door frame.

Keep in mind that custom doors will have different measurements. If in doubt, most door companies will assist you in measuring the door. They will also discuss options for upgrades and custom design options. When in doubt, it is also best to ask for professional help to ensure the correct measurements before ordering replacement exterior doors.
