Our latest project was a complete front entry door replacement for a home in Vancouver, BC. The homeowners wanted to upgrade their entrance with a larger, more refined, and more secure entry system while maintaining the traditional Craftsman character of the home.
During the initial consultation, the client selected a custom fiberglass Craftsman double entry door combined with two sidelights. The door system was finished in stain, creating the rich appearance of natural wood while providing the durability, stability, and low maintenance benefits of fiberglass construction.
The entry system was designed with sandblasted privacy glass and decorative SDL grilles painted to match the door colour. This combination allowed natural light into the home while maintaining privacy and creating a clean, coordinated appearance throughout the entire entrance.
The hardware configuration included a GML-400 long plate handle and a multipoint locking system for improved security, better compression against the weather seals, and reliable everyday operation. A composite frame was selected for enhanced resistance to moisture and seasonal movement, while the aluminum sill provided a durable and weather-resistant base for the complete entry system.
An integrated mail slot was installed in one of the sidelights, adding practical functionality without disrupting the overall design. Because the existing entrance was also configured as a double door with two sidelights, the large opening was an excellent fit for the new system and allowed us to preserve the proportions of the original entrance while significantly upgrading its appearance and performance.
Challenges and Solutions
This project involved a large entry opening and a more complex configuration consisting of a double door with two sidelights. Precise measurements, alignment, and installation were essential to ensure the entire system remained balanced, secure, and visually symmetrical.
Challenges:
The main challenge was ensuring precise alignment of the double door, both sidelights, composite frame, multipoint locking system, and hardware within the large existing opening.
The SDL grilles, sandblasted privacy glass, GML-400 handle, and integrated mail slot also had to be positioned carefully so that all visual elements remained balanced and consistent across the full width of the entrance.
It was also important to maintain proper spacing between both door slabs and sidelights while ensuring smooth operation, correct engagement of the multipoint locking system, and a tight seal around the complete entry system.
Solutions:
Our installation team completely removed the existing entry system and carefully prepared the opening for the new custom configuration.
The composite frame was installed, levelled, and secured first, followed by both fiberglass door slabs and the two sidelights. Each component was carefully adjusted to achieve consistent reveals, proper alignment, and smooth operation.
The sandblasted privacy glass, decorative SDL grilles, GML-400 long plate handle, and mail slot were integrated into the final configuration with close attention to detail. The multipoint locking system was then adjusted to ensure reliable engagement, enhanced security, and proper compression against the weather seals.
The completed project resulted in a large, elegant, and highly functional Craftsman entry system that combines stained fiberglass, privacy glass, decorative SDL grilles, premium hardware, a composite frame, and enhanced security through the multipoint locking system.
